Autism in Women and Girls

Although there are some shared traits in both males and females, females often present differently. Autistic girls and women are often misdiagnosed and misunderstood. As a result, autistic women are often diagnosed late in life, often missing key early intervention support.

Women and girls can be better at 'masking' their difficulties and autistic traits to fit in with their peers. While this can give the appearance that the woman or girl is coping, masking 

 

An autistic girl may present as:

- Extremely shy or anxious

- Perfectly behaved and contained at school while showing significant difficulties with emotional regulation at home.

- Extremely empathic and sensitive
