Child Development

Early child development refers to the rapid growth and learning that happens from birth to around age 8. It's a crucial time when a child's brain makes millions of connections every second. Play and interaction are essential for this development, as is good nutrition, health, and a safe environment.

Child development can refer to a child's development in:

  • Physical (gross motor and fine motor)

  • Language and communication

  • Social

  • Personal

  • Emotional

  • Thinking skills

Sometimes one or more of the above skills may be delayed without any clear reason why. A comprehensive developmental assessment can be crucial in better understanding your child's developmental profile and their strengths and differences to provided targeted supports.

Types of delay in development

- Global developmental delay (GDD)

- Intellectual Developmental Disorder (Intellectual Disability)

- Isolated speech delay

- Gross motor delay

Delay vs. Disability

A "delay" in a child's development refers to the child having a slower rate of development in one or more areas compared to same aged peers. A developmental delay may be temporary and can sometimes be 'outgrown' with early intervention and time.

A developmental disability refers to a permanent and lifelong condition which can change but is typically not 'outgrown'. A developmental disability may start off being referred to as a delay.
